Fine lines and wrinkles are the result of reduced elastin and collagen, and often the first tell-tale signs of maturing skin – especially in those highly active areas of facial expression around the mouth and the eyes. There is often a degree of asymmetry to the lines, as we tend to smile or frown more on one side than the other, or consistently sleep on the same cheek. Many factors, like cigarette smoke, other environmental factors as well as dryness contribute to lines, but no matter how well we look after our skin, all of us will eventually bear these signs of the passage of time.
The various degrees of severity that are found:
Mild - Fine lines and wrinkles which can be adequately covered by make-up.
Moderate - Can also be covered with make- up, but it will not hide the lines as effectively. This form is typically early wrinkling, with a sallow complexion.
Advanced - Requires coverage by foundation, rather than make-up. This is persistent wrinkling, often accompanied by skin discolouration, with broken blood vessels and sun damage.
Severe - Deep and severe wrinkling and furrows, usually with sunspots, neither of which can be adequately disguised by make-up or foundation.
Botox® is a trade-name for the neuromodulator protein called botulinum Toxin A, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum – a completely harmless product. The treatment involves the injection of Botox® (or a similar neuromodulator such as Disport®) into specific muscles with a very fine needle, which relaxes the contraction response of the muscles by blocking certain nerve impulses temporarily. Since the muscles cannot contract, the wrinkles associated with that soften, and become less visible. The procedure has been performed on many millions of people worldwide. Results are usually seen in about 4 days with maximum effects around 14 days, and will last up to 4-6 months.
Repeat treatment will be required to maintain the effect, but with subsequent treatments, wrinkles permanently become less severe, it has been found.
Most soft tissue fillers are either Hyaluronic acid, or collagen based. Both are naturally occurring substances in the body. Other tissue fillers are calcium hydroxyapatite gels. Hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance, is injected below the skin in areas that need plumping and filling, to temporarily reverse sagging, hollowness, and lines and wrinkles, by adding volume and hydration to the skin. The result is an immediate improvement in the appearance of deep wrinkles and facial folds (such as nasolabial lines) and so a more youthful and radiant appearance, which can last up to a year. Lips can be redefined and plumped up, noses reshaped and subtle changes made to facial imbalances and imperfections with the use of soft tissue fillers as well.
